Toothpillow® Therapy in Saint Paul, MN

Supporting Healthy Airway Development and Facial Growth

At The Minnesota Center for Minimally Invasive Dentistry, we offer Toothpillow® therapy as part of our airway-focused approach to dentistry. Toothpillow is a growth-guidance appliance designed to support proper orofacial development, improve oral posture, and promote healthier breathing—especially in children.

This therapy aligns closely with our preventive, minimally invasive philosophy and our focus on addressing root causes rather than simply treating symptoms.

What Is Toothpillow®?

Toothpillow® is a removable oral appliance designed to guide jaw growth and support proper development of the airway. Unlike traditional orthodontic approaches that focus primarily on straightening teeth, Toothpillow emphasizes function first—including breathing, tongue posture, and facial growth.

The appliance is typically worn at night and during short daytime periods, depending on the child’s developmental stage and individual needs.

Why Airway Development Matters

Proper airway development plays a critical role in a child’s overall health. When the jaws and facial structures do not develop optimally, it may contribute to:

  • Mouth breathing
  • Snoring
  • Disrupted or poor-quality sleep
  • Narrow arches or crowding
  • Improper tongue posture
  • Behavioral or attention concerns linked to poor sleep

Toothpillow therapy is designed to help guide growth in a way that supports nasal breathing and a more stable, open airway.

Who May Benefit from Toothpillow® Therapy?

Toothpillow is typically considered for children who show signs of:

  • Narrow dental arches
  • Crowding at an early age
  • Mouth breathing or snoring
  • Improper oral posture
  • Concerns related to airway development

Early evaluation is key. Toothpillow is most effective when used during periods of active growth, which is why airway screening is often incorporated into routine Exams and Cleanings.

Toothpillow® and Airway Dentistry

Toothpillow therapy is one of the ways we support Airway Dentistry at our practice. Airway dentistry focuses on how the teeth, jaws, and facial structures affect breathing and sleep quality throughout life.

In some cases, Toothpillow may be used alongside other growth-focused approaches such as HealthyStart®, depending on the child’s age, development, and individual needs.

Conservative, Growth-Guided Care

Our goal with Toothpillow therapy is not to rush treatment or overcorrect, but to gently guide natural growth. This approach allows us to:

  • Support healthy development early
  • Potentially reduce the need for more complex orthodontic treatment later
  • Focus on function, not just appearance
  • Stay aligned with minimally invasive principles

Every recommendation is personalized, and we carefully evaluate whether Toothpillow is appropriate before proceeding.

What to Expect During a Toothpillow Evaluation

A Toothpillow evaluation includes:

  • A comprehensive dental exam
  • Assessment of growth and development
  • Review of breathing and sleep habits
  • Discussion of findings and treatment options

If Toothpillow therapy is recommended, we will explain how the appliance works, how it fits into your child’s overall care, and what kind of results may be expected over time.

Is Toothpillow® Right for Your Child?

Not every child is a candidate for Toothpillow therapy. Candidacy depends on growth stage, anatomy, and clinical findings. Our role is to provide education, guidance, and conservative options so families can make informed decisions.

If airway development or sleep quality is a concern, we encourage early evaluation rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.

What Our Patients Are Saying

After working with Dr. Malterud for a couple of weeks to get the right fit for my NTI, the results are great. I may still get a headache but only for a few hours and not severe.

— Judy Wiedl

It's hard to believe that something so small could change my life in such a big way. I have been pain free without drugs or surgery for years now. My teeth have been saved from more damage because I don't grind them any more.

— Therese L

Mark is the absolute best. I recommend him and his team to everyone. No matter where I live in the world, our family will always use his services. Worth traveling the world over for. Thanks Mark!
