At The Minnesota Center for Minimally Invasive Dentistry, we use DEXIS CariVu® as part of our comprehensive Exams and Cleanings to help identify certain cavities and cracks early—often before they become larger problems.

CariVu uses near-infrared light to transilluminate the tooth, allowing us to visualize areas of concern without ionizing radiation. It is a powerful addition to our diagnostic tools and supports our conservative, prevention-focused approach to care.

What Is DEXIS CariVu?

DEXIS CariVu is a handheld diagnostic device that shines near-infrared light through the tooth. Healthy tooth structure transmits light differently than areas affected by decay or cracks, helping those areas appear darker and easier to identify.

Because CariVu uses light rather than radiation, it allows us to gather additional information comfortably and safely during your exam—without exposing you to additional X-rays.

Important: CariVu Is Not a Replacement for X-Rays

While CariVu is an excellent diagnostic aid, it does not replace dental X-rays.

We still rely on X-rays when needed because they provide critical information that CariVu cannot, including:

• Bone levels
• Tooth roots
• Areas below the gumline
• Certain types of decay not visible with transillumination

We follow evidence-based radiograph guidelines and personalize imaging based on your risk level, clinical findings, and health history. CariVu enhances our diagnostics—it does not replace them.

DEXIS CariVu is especially helpful in the following situations:
