Airway Dentistry in Saint Paul, MN
Supporting Healthy Breathing, Sleep, and Orofacial Development
At The Minnesota Center for Minimally Invasive Dentistry, Airway Dentistry focuses on how oral and facial development affects breathing, sleep quality, and long-term health. Proper airway development plays a critical role in oxygen intake, sleep quality, facial growth, and overall wellness—especially in children, but also in adults.
Our approach is preventive, conservative, and personalized, with an emphasis on identifying root causes rather than simply managing symptoms.
What Is Airway Dentistry?
Airway Dentistry evaluates how the teeth, jaws, tongue, and facial structures influence breathing—both during the day and while sleeping. When airway development is restricted or altered, it may contribute to issues such as:
- Mouth breathing
- Snoring
- Poor sleep quality
- Sleep-disordered breathing
- Crowding or narrow arches
- Headaches, fatigue, or behavioral concerns in children
By addressing airway concerns early and conservatively, we aim to support healthy growth, proper development, and improved sleep.
Airway-Focused Care for Children and Adults
Airway issues can begin early in life but often persist into adulthood if left unaddressed. Our airway-focused evaluations are commonly integrated into routine Exams and Cleanings so we can monitor growth patterns, breathing habits, and risk factors over time.
When appropriate, we may recommend early intervention or supportive therapies designed to guide growth and improve function rather than waiting for more complex problems to develop.
HealthyStart®: Guiding Proper Growth and Development
HealthyStart® is an early orthodontic system designed to help guide jaw development, improve oral posture, and support proper airway growth in children.
HealthyStart focuses on:
- Encouraging nasal breathing
- Supporting proper tongue posture
- Guiding jaw growth and alignment
- Reducing risk factors associated with airway restriction
HealthyStart is most effective when started early, during key developmental stages. You can learn more about this approach on our Healthy Start page.
Toothpillow® Therapy
We are also a Toothpillow® provider, offering an appliance-based approach designed to support orofacial growth and airway development. Toothpillow therapy focuses on gentle, functional guidance rather than forceful tooth movement.
Toothpillow may be considered for children with signs of:
- Narrow arches
- Crowding
- Mouth breathing
- Snoring or disrupted sleep
- Airway development concerns
Candidacy is determined through a comprehensive exam and growth evaluation.
Airway Dentistry and Sleep-Disordered Breathing
Airway concerns are closely linked to sleep quality. In some patients, restricted airflow during sleep may contribute to snoring or more significant sleep-related breathing issues.
For patients with diagnosed or suspected sleep-related concerns, airway-focused dental care may complement services such as Sleep Apnea treatment and other conservative therapies aimed at improving airflow and sleep quality.
Conservative, Whole-Body Focused Care
Our airway dentistry philosophy aligns with our broader commitment to biological and minimally invasive dentistry. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we focus on:
- Identifying root causes
- Supporting natural growth and development
- Using non-surgical, conservative therapies whenever possible
- Coordinating care based on individual risk and needs
When appropriate, airway-focused treatment may be integrated with other services designed to support overall health and wellness.
Is Airway Dentistry Right for You or Your Child?
Not every patient needs airway-focused treatment, but early screening can be valuable. We will determine candidacy based on:
- Clinical exam findings
- Growth and development patterns
- Breathing and sleep history
- Risk factors identified during evaluation
Our goal is to provide guidance and options—not pressure—so families can make informed decisions about care.
What Our Patients Are Saying
After working with Dr. Malterud for a couple of weeks to get the right fit for my NTI, the results are great. I may still get a headache but only for a few hours and not severe.
— Judy Wiedl
It's hard to believe that something so small could change my life in such a big way. I have been pain free without drugs or surgery for years now. My teeth have been saved from more damage because I don't grind them any more.
— Therese L
Mark is the absolute best. I recommend him and his team to everyone. No matter where I live in the world, our family will always use his services. Worth traveling the world over for. Thanks Mark!
